International Women's Day Interview

Lucy Elliott

Ahead of the launch of our second Charity chocolate bar for International Women’s Day 2019, we asked our Instagram followers to interview the team!

Answering the questions are founders (AH and LE), kitchen manager (AS) and marketing manager (AP).

How did you get brave enough to get started?

LE: At the time the idea to start a brand came about I was 23 and to be honest I had nothing to lose. I was very naive about what kind of a commitment I was making but I was so driven by the creative process that I just went for it. Obviously my family were doing it with me so there’s safety in numbers which really helped it be less daunting than going alone. We were also very conservative with our initial cash investment, so there was less pressure on that side of things, plus Andrea and I were so behind our products that we were confident that we could make a go of building a business!

Did you teach yourselves how to make chocolate?

LE: After some years dabbling with baking as a hobby, the two of us took a weekend course with an Italian Chef to learn the basics of tempering. It was a ‘unique’ experience to say the least but it did the job! Once we had some knowledge we set up in the garage to practice on our first line of products and then opened the shop 6 months later. That’s not a lot of time to learn everything about chocolate and really it’s taken us many years of making mistakes and learning from them.

In 2010 on our ‘Professional Chocolate Making’ course. This picture was taken on an actual film camera by the lovable Ildo (our teacher) and we are posing on his driveway with the chocolate delights we made over the weekend. Other highlights of that weekend were: speeding across Oswestry in his vintage Mercedes, watching him on VHS blow sugar swans on The Generation Game, melting chocolate over a lightbulb.

What’s the best part about working in an all women team?

AH: Learning to understand women better - remember, Venus not Mars!

AP: Having sanitary products in the bathroom as a basic requirement

What did the brand start off looking like?

LE: There are only two elements of the original branding from 2011 that still exist: our logo and our printed wrapping paper. Everything else has evolved over the years as I believe a good brand should. We change with the trends but try to maintain a ‘signature’ feel of Creighton’s at all times. Like every designer I cringe at my historic design work a bit, but I loved it at the time!

Name one thing You Can (see what we did there?!) do now that you couldn’t do last year

AP: Drive! I passed my test this week!

AH: Make as many chocolate bars!

LE: Keep more than one house plant alive

Name a woman who inspires you:

AS: The Queen

AH: Lucy, I would have given up by now!

LE: My sister-in-law, having the balls to come to a foreign country on her own, navigate our alien culture, put up with cold weather and marry my stinky brother.

When does the new chocolate bar come out?!

AP: You Can launches on 8th March and will be available exclusively from our online store.
